Yellow Sun Guides

Choosing a major
shouldn’t be guesswork.

We publish one guide per campus with a straight-talking chapter on every undergraduate major—what you actually study, what the four years feel like, and where graduates end up. Our first volume covers Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

What we do
Our approach Every major, not just the popular ones. Plain facts, plainly told. Written for students and families. 6 colleges in volume one

One campus,
every major.

Yellow Sun Guides is our imprint for college major guides.

Course catalogs list requirements. Admissions sites sell. Neither one tells a seventeen-year-old what a major is actually like, or what happens after it. Each of our guides takes a single campus and works through its majors one by one, in the same format every time, so they can be read side by side and compared honestly.

  • What you studyThe core sequence, the labs and studios, and the courses that decide who stays in the major.
  • What it feels likeWorkload, pace, class sizes, and the terms students say are the hardest.
  • Getting inHow selective the major is, and what changing into or out of it really takes.
  • After graduationThe jobs and graduate paths the major actually leads to, and the ones it doesn’t.
  • Same shape, every majorOne consistent chapter format, so comparing two majors takes minutes instead of weeks.
  • Every formatEbook, paperback, and hardcover editions, priced for families.

We are independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or paid by any college or university, and no school has a say in what a guide says about it.

Now in preparation: Every Major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Our first guide covers the undergraduate majors at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo—across agriculture, architecture and environmental design, business, engineering, liberal arts, and science and mathematics—with a chapter on each, plus what Cal Poly’s learn-by-doing approach means in practice, major by major. We’re writing it now and will announce the edition here when it’s ready. More campuses follow.

In the meantime, you can explore the original fiction we publish at Yellow Sun Press and our restored editions at Yellow Sun Classics.
